Spreading Battered Wings

The Second Novel of the trilogy Land of Broken Promises 1942-1947 - First draft completed

Blurb

1942 and Rommel is set to invade Egypt and sweep through the Levant. The Jewish Agency and the British Government in Palestine put aside their differences and organise themselves to fight against a common enemy. Feeling amongst the Arabic population is more divided. Most Arabs content themselves with waiting for the outcome of the war, although a few actively support the Germans and some help the British.

Three friends who met at secretarial school in 1938 take an active role in the defence of Palestine in the event of invasion

  • Maftur Shawwa works in a secret research site on the Golan Heights
  • Patsy Quigley works for a hush-hush unit in Cairo organising Anglo-Jewish Resistance in Palestine.
  • Dalia Leitner, after wireless maintenance training, joins a guerrilla unit based in the unmapped Negev wilderness.

After Rommel is defeated at el-Alamein, Anglo-Jewish co-operation ceases. Dalia returns to the Negev to help found a Jewish settlement. Maftur's husband joins the Arab Legion.

Can the friendship between the three women continue under the changed political circumstances?
