Kouklos - 2001

I visited this magnificent series of Greek temples on hills overlooking the Mediterranean. The Greeks certainly knew how to pick their sites.

I could see no signs forbidding visitors to take photographs at the World Heritage site so I am putting up photographs I took of the mosaics. They puzzled me greatly at the time , The baby Dionysius sitting on Hermes especially this one which appeared to be pre-Christian and yet the composition of the top frame, is reminiscent of many Nativity scenes. The women's dresses too, to my untutored eye, look mediaeval. I knew the guide who took us to Nicosia had told us Cypriots in Cyprus had adopted Christianity almost without noticing , merely renaming the goddess Aphrodite the Virgin Mary. Since my visit I have bought an excellent guide to the Paphos Mosaics by W.A. Daszewski and D. Michaelides. The mosaics seem to have been created in the early part of the 4th century AD when the Apostate Emperor Julian was trying to re-introduce Paganism with Dionysius embodying all the other Gods into himself so perhaps the resemblance to a Christian nativity scene is not such a co-incidence
