We had lunch at a Police Station called Rouduf Billet, which in the distant past was Pilot's Palace. This is where Jesus was tried and condemned to death and is the first of the 12 Stations of the Cross depicting the final journey to His death.
Across the road are two churches built over the spot where Jesus was whipped and crowned with thorns in an ineffective attempt by Pilot to appease the accusing crowd. The grounds of the church were part of the original Palace courtyard on which carved games were preserved.
The Roman Soldiers would gamble on these, the winner took all, and the loser was put to death. However as Romans could not be put to death for such a trifling act, they are alleged to have selected a prisoner to be killed instead. Ah! For the good old days.
One church had five altars, over one was a dome depicting "The Crown of Thorns'' and the tabernacle had the ''Crowned Head'' worked in relief on the door. The other altars were dedicated in honor of '' B Mario Vergo'' ''St. Francisu'' '' "St Johannes" " and ''St Paulus'' respectively, (actual spelling).
