Nazareth was all Arab, and consisted mostly of a very long main street, with dirt roads off either side on which houses were built. This is where ''The Holy family's is alleged to have lived before their journey to Bethlehem. In the centre of town on the main road, is 'Mary's Well', dating to BC and still in use daily. It was an interesting sight to see the women fill large pitchers with water and carry it on top of their heads, as they no doubt have done these past thousands of years. Another phenomena was the well dressed Arab with at least two bodyguards armed with rifles (with special permission) walking about, usually smoking a large cigar. It is alleged they sometimes light these cigars with five-pound notes, to show how rich they are. These "genesis" had sold large tracts of land to Jews, a strict no no as far as the Arab League are concerned, hence the need for a bodyguard. As I was riding by a small market place one day I heard a shout and saw a young boy, about twelve years old, running with a Sten gun in his hand and a British Solder limping in pursuit, the boy had grabbed the gun and the solder had a bad leg and could not run after him. I gave chase on the motor bicycle until the boy slipped through a hole in a wall. I drew my revolver, planning to shoot over his head in an attempt to stop him. ' Just in time I remembered my nonpolitical status. A man was standing in a doorway so I told him to remember the name of the boy and asked for his name. I then called on my friend Naif Jarjoura, told him what happened and the name of the man in the doorway and said I was leaving it up to him as to what to do. I mentioned it was likely the army would search every house in Nazareth if the gun was not returned since he and I had often discussed how many Arabs had guns hidden in there houses. Later that night I heard the remarkable story of a stolen Sten gun, found on the street and returned to the army, just as they were about to search for it.
Later Naif thanked me but said I should have shot the little B-------for causing all the trouble. Nazareth had a fairly good movie house and ran upto-date U.S. movies, this was available to me at no charge, and of course there also was a small nightspot in Affula at the same reasonable rates. In fact it was impossible for me to buy a drink for myself or anybody else with me, after I ordered the first drank more followed without request. I asked the District Traffic Officer his opinion of these ''free-bees'' and he said not to worry, they were not to induce me not to do my job, but rather a show of respect and the hope I would not get overworked.
On one occasion there was a 100% stand too ordered. It was reported that Nazareth was to be attacked by the Stern Gang. I was out on my motor bicycle and as there was not a single person or vehicle on the road it got very monotonous. I decided to visit the movie house. It too was empty but when the manager saw me enter he said welcome, just a moment and he started the show. I do not even remember what was on but it was the only time I ever had a full size theater to myself for a full program. The manager told me as I went out that it was rumored the movie house could be the target of the attack.
