William John
HERRICK
First Generation
1. William John HERRICK .
William was
employed as Book Keeper in Angel Inn, Islington, London.
William was a book keeper at Angel
Inn, Islington when stage coaches ran instead of trams. He died
at the early age of 25 years leaving
two little boys and one girl, namely William John, John Joseph
and Betsy. Betsy stayed behind in
London when the ALLEN family immigrated to New Zealand.
William married Elizabeth
TOOGOOD . Elizabeth was born in 1804 in England.
Elisabeth married William HERRICK and
had two boys, William John and Joseph John, and a
daughter Betsy in London.
Elizabeth married Edward William
ALLEN after the death of her first husband William HERRICK in
London, and had two girls, Elizabeth
and Eliza. Edward ALLEN had been a
widower before his
marriage to Elizabeth. Together with
their children, they immigrated to Nelson, New Zealand on the "
Fifeshire" arriving on 1st
February 1842, under the name ALLEN. The boys later took their name
back as HERRICK. Elizabeth was the
'Matron' on board during the trip out and William John was in
charge of the Sunday School.
The "Fifeshire" passenger
list records:
Edward William ALLEN, age 35, a carpenter
who acted as School Teacher and Surgeon's Assistant
during the voyage.
Betsy ALLEN, age 37.
John ALLEN, age 15, carpenter (This
is William John HERRICK).
Joseph ALLEN, age 11 (This is Joseph
John HERRICK).
Elizabeth (Betsy), age 9.
Eliza, age 7.
The "Fifeshire" was a ship
of 557 tons, Captained by Harford Arnold, and sailed from London on 17
th September 1841 & Downs on 2nd
October 1841 and arrived in Nelson on 1st February 1842.
"Fifeshire" was one of the
first four boats and on her maiden voyage when bringing settlers of the
NZC to Nelson. "Lord
Auckland", "Mary Ann" and "Lloyds" all set out on the
same day, the "Fifeshire"
being the first to arrive. These
ships brought out 764 people into Nelson. "Fifeshire" was an unlucky
boat from the start. During the
voyage fever broke out and 17 passengers died, their bodies being
buried at sea. Until the scourge
began to abate the passengers were in a most melancholy state, as
they did not know where it was going
to end. When navigating Cook Strait the ship nearly came to
grief, The pilot took her between
Stephen's Island and the mainland and, the wind failing at a critical
moment, it looked as though she would
go ashore, but Captain Arnold sent away a boat with a
kedge, which dropped in the nick of
time and the ship hauled into safety.
Referring to "Fifeshire's"
arrival the Nelson Examiner said that;
"as the ladies (cabin passengers)
dressed in the London fashions of
1841, were carried ashore from the ship's boats the Maori broke
into loud exclamations of wonder and
delight. 'Kapai!' "Kapai te wahine!' 'Kapai te piccaninny!' said
the natives, who though familiar
enough with white men, had never before seen the prevailing
European fashions for women and
children."
After disembarking passengers and
discharging cargo the ship was cleared for China but
unfortunately never made it out of
Nelson Harbour. On the morning of 27th February, in charge of an
acting Pilot (Captain F. G Moore -
the regular Pilot was unwell), she got under way. She had nearly
passed through the narrow channel
entrance when the wind failed, and the tide carried her on Arrow
Reef. Strenuous efforts were made to
get her off, but it was useless and at low water she was lying
nearly high and dry. Her hull could
not stand the strain and her back was badly broken. She was
condemned and sold for breaking
up. Source: White Wings, Sir Henry
Brett.

Spring

moved to Motueka and settled in Lower Moutere, where Mr Herrick
subsequently acquired about 700 acres
of land. As in the case of his first residence in New Zealand,
Mr Herrick had himself to carve out a
home in the bush, and to contend with the difficulties
associated with settling on swampy
land. Mr Herrick was born in London in 1825, and followed the
calling of a linen draper, in Regent
Street, up to the time of his departure from the Old Country. He
died early in 1892, when he left a
widow, seven sons, and four daughters to mourn him as a loving
husband and affectionate father. Mr
Herrick was a public spirited colonist, and was most generous
in all his dealings. His widow
resides on the homestead at Lower Moutere, where the property is
managed by one of the younger sons.
Mrs Herrick herself is a very old colonist, as she arrived at
Nelson by the ship
"Clifford" on the 24th May, 1842. Source: Cyclopedia of New Zealand

HERRICK, J. J., Farmer, “Hill View,” Tai Tapu. Mr. Herrick
was born at Islington, London, in 1831,
and came to New Zealand with his
parents, in the ship “Fifeshire,” which landed at Nelson on the 1st
of February, 1842. In 1852 Mr.
Herrick visited the Australian gold diggings, but returned to Nelson
during the following year. He then
followed farming until 1863, during
which he came to Canterbury
and purchased one hundred acres of
land at Tai Tapu in its native state for £3 an acre, and named
the place “Meadowbank.” The land was
all heavy swamp, which was covered with flax, raupo and “
nigger-heads,” and to take off the
water Mr. Herrick cut a main drain 15 feet by 7 feet to the Halswell.
When thus drained the land was
stocked with Shorthorn cattle, and when it became dry and firm, it
was cropped with the best results. In
1875, Mr. Herrick bought 100 acres at £20 per acre, from the
late Mr. R. H. Rhodes, and on this he
erected a good dwellinghouse, with substantial outbuildings
and a stockyard, second to none in
the district, and he also made a garden, and orchard, and
plantations. This property is “Hill
View,” where he has his home. Mr. Herrick rented an additional 180
acres later on, and all his farms are
devoted to grain growing, dairying and fattening sheep for the
export trade. Mr. Herrick was the
first storekeeper at Tai Tapu, and he ran the first coach that carried
mails to the place. He has been
a member of the Springston Road Board
for eighteen years, and
has been chairman for several years.
Mr. Herrick also served on the Lincoln school committee for
fifteen years, and was chairman for

school committee for many years, and
was director of the dairy factory for eight years, and a director
of the New Zealand Farmer’s
Co-operative Association, Ltd., over ten years. He always takes a

Herrick was married, in 1858, to Miss Hammond, of Nelson,
who also landed in Nelson, in 1842,
and has eight sons and five daughters, seven of whom are
