Received from Richard Herrick of Holt, Michigan, a suburb of Lansing, MI. RLH:mtf:20030426

I am the President of the Herrick Family Association, HFA, founded November 01, 2001 as a non-profit corporation in the state of Minnesota in the USA. The HFA and its formers have been researching the two men named Henry Herrick for the past five years. The one called Henry of Salem came to New England with the Higginson-Skelton fleet of Puritans July 1629. He was not the 5th s/o Sir William Heyricke as is claimed by the 1846 and 1885 editions of the Herrick Genealogical Register, 46HGR and 85HGR. Henry of Salem was born in England by about 1598 and died after November 24, 1670, the date of his Will, and before March 15, 1670/71, the date of his Estate Inventory. His Will was proved in court March 28, 1671. The 5th s/o Sir William Heyricke, Henry "Hen" Heyricke, Henry of Virginia, is documented as being in England during May 1630 and November 1634 whilst Henerie Hericke, Henry of Salem, was in new England. Henry of Virginia and his wife Ann were transported to Virginia for 100 acres of land and Henry is documented as having been in court in York County, Virginia on March 17, 1641. Until I began to research the origin of Henry of Salem to prove that he was the 5th s/o Sir William I believed the 46HGR and 85HGR. But within six months of starting said research it became clear to me that there were at least two men named Henry Herrick that immigrated to America in the early 1600s. Henry "Hen" Heyricke has been documented in and around the York County, Virginia area up until about 1657/58, after which time we have found no records of him. The HFA does not know his fate, or the fate of his wife Ann, or if they had any issue. The clincher that there were two such men is the copy of three signatures of Henerie Hericke, Henry of Salem that do not match the five copies of the signature of Henry "Hen" Heyricke that we hold. One of the signatures of Henry of Virginia was found on a court document in Virginia. The HFA has a Web Site at the following URL: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~herrick/ If you are interested I will send you a twelve page document that details the research of the HFA, which includes four others that cooperated in the research into the two men named Henry Herrick. The HFA is quite sure that Henry of Salem is related to the greater Heyricke family of Leicester and the county of Leicester. Our most recent suspect was dubbed Henry of Belgrave. Up to this point in time we have not been able to verify if he was the individual that was dubbed as Henry of Salem in the 46HGR and 85HGR. Relatively yours, Richard Leon Herrick, eleventh generation descendant of Henerie Hericke of Salem, Mssachusetts. RLH:mtf:20030426

"Who Was Henerie Hericke of Salem?"

WHERE HENRY OF SALEM and HENRY OF VIRGINIA WERE and WHEN THEY WERE THERE Two years after Jedediah Herrick published his 1846 Herrick Genealogy he wrote to William Perry-Herrick, who was the last lineal Herrick to own the Beaumanor estate in Leicestershire. Jedediah thanked William for his kind comments about his 1846 book and stated the following about Henry of Salem and the June 28, 1653 that Henry of Virginia wrote from Virginia to his brother John Heyricke in England: “All of them circumstances which I cannot attach to Henry of Salem.” “I can barely recognize our Henry and the author of that letter.” HENRY of SALEM: was born by about 1598 in England. arrived in Salem by ca July 1629, it is believed that he came with the Higginson-Skelton fleet of Puritans, but this has not been verified. petitioned for freeman October 19, 1630. was sworn a freeman May 18, 1631. was granted a farm of 2 or 3 acres on the north side of Massey’s Cove January 25, 1635/36. received forty acres in the freeman’s land and another forty acres above Mr. Cole in the Salem land grant of 1636. received three quarters of an acre with a household of five in the Salem land grant of 1637. sold forty acres of land sometime before 1652 to Robert Goodall. served on the Essex grand jury December 1650, June 28, 1653, [the same day that Henry of Virginia wrote the letter from Virginia to his brother John Heyricke in England], November 30, 1652, November 28, 1654, June 26, 1655, [the day after Henry of Virginia was in Court in York County, Virginia], November 27, 1660, June 25, 1661, November 25, 1662, June 30, 1663, November 29, 1664, and November 26, 1667. served on Petit jury in Essex County December 26, 1648, December 25, 1649, October 20, 1653, and June 28, 1659. purchased 100 acres of land and six acres of land on July 01, 1653, [the fourth day of the grand jury term that reportedly began June 28, 1653]. witnessed and signed the Will of John Friend in Salem on November 04, 1655. conducted and signed the Estate Inventory of Agnes [Annis] Balch on in Salem on December 06, 1655. was a Salem Constable in 1656. was freed from training in Salem at the June 1658 term, [which is the basis that he was b. by about 1598]. sold one acre of land in Salem on May 26, 1667. sold twelve acres of land in Salem on October 26, 1668. executed his will in Beverly, dated November 25, 1670. Said will was proved March 28, 1671 at Ipswich. died before March 15, 1670/71, which is the date that his Estate Inventory was taken. HENRY of VIRGINIA: was born August 16, 1604. was christened August 26, 1604. witnessed an Indenture in England dated April 11, 1622. was apprenticed to John Pocock, Woollen-Draper, in England by May 1622 until at least 1627. received a letter at the “Signe of the Plough” in Watling Street, London, dated May 07, 1630, that was written by his brother, Roger Heyricke, to their father Sir William Heyricke. witnessed the marriage settlement of his sister, Martha, in England, that was dated November 07, 1634. was in York County, Virginia on March 17, 1641. was transported to Virginia, with his wife Ann before September 23, 1642. signed off on September 12, 1643 on a land certificate from the Court of Elizabeth City County, Virginia, to the Rev. It is not known when Henry of Virginia and his wife Ann died, or if they died in Virginia or in England, or if they had any issue that survived them at either location. But they were married in England on the basis that they were transported to Virginia before March 17, 1641. Further evidence that Henerie Hericke of New England was not Henry “Hen.” Heyricke of Virginia are three copies of the signature of Henry of Salem: 1. found in Sidney Perley’s book titled, The History of Salem, Massachusetts, 1924, [of which the source could be #2 or #3 below.] 2. found on the Will of John Friend dated November 10, 1655. 3. found on the Estate Inventory of Agnes [Annis] Balch dated December 06, 1656. The three signatures described above match each other, but they do not match the five copies of Henry “Hen.” Heyricke of Virginia cited as follows: 1. found on an Indenture dated April 11, 1622. 2. found on his sister’s marriage settlement dated November 07, 1634. 3. found on a binder of Hugh Allen on a court document in York County, Virginia dated March 08, 1647/48. 4. found on a letter written from Virginia dated June 28, 1653. 5. found in Nichols’ History and Antiquities of the county of Leicester, Volume III, Part I, published 1800, [of which the source could be #4 above, as it is dated as being from 1653.] These five signatures match each other.
