Nola Moses from New Zealand writesI'm interested in William Herrick who married Elizabeth Toogood. He died at a early age in England and Elizabeth remarried and came to New Zealand with her two sons from her marriage to William Herrick. She remarried in 1837 so William would of died shortly before this How did he die and who was his parents?
I know we are in some way connected to Robert herrick the Poet. A little bit of what an old letter written by a Herrick daughter in 1850 says.
William John Herrick was born at Pentenville, London Nov 4th 1825. His father was William John Herrick. The ones in William Johns family were Joseph the Congregational minister at Colchester for 50 years Henry, 2nd son was a barometer and Thermometer maker in London William John Our Ancestor John 4th son died while young from an accident Sarah married a man named Mussett
I'm pretty sure that Sir William Herrick and Robert Herrick the poet are our ancestors.
A letter written by Emily Elizabeth Herrick b 1850 in N.Z mentions
" In the early 1700s a person by the name of Sylvanus Urban, discovered the poems written by Robert Herrick and was instrumental in having them published. Sylvanus was taken as a family name. ( a few of the N.Z Herricks have Sylvanus in their names). goes on to say"Robert herrick, the poet was the son of a silver and goldsmith and it is noticeable how each generation down to my fathers family there were silversmiths and goldsmiths or jewellers in each line of descendants."
and more
"Elizabeth Toogood,s grandmother was a descendant of the earl of Fortesque. Her Uncle and 2 aunts were at St James Palace for years. The uncle was porter to George iv and William iv and died in the service of Queen Victoria at the age of 84."I dont know if youve seen the grave of Robert herrick but this is what she says
" In 1857 ( I,think, her writing is a bit hard to read) a costly monument was erected to the memory of Robert Herrick, Minister and Poet. in Dean Prior church by a kinsman and then present head of the family, William Percy Herrick, Beau Manor Park, Leicestershire.. It is out of solid block of (something-)stone and adorned with a rich carving of fruit and foliage and the inscription in the brass plate is as follows. In this churchyard lie the remains of Robert HerrickAuthor of Hesperides and other poems. of an ancient family of Leicestershire and born in the year 1591. He was educated at St ( ?) college and Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Preented to this living (etc etc too hard to read) This tablet was erected to his memory by his kinsman William Percy Herrick a.d.1857 Susequently Nola sent this:

As in the case of his first residence in new Zealand, he had to carve out a home in the bush, and to contend with the difficulities associated with settling on swampy land.Mr Herrick was born in London in 1825, and followed the calling of a linen Draper, in Regent Street up to the time of his departure from the Old Counrty. He died early in 1892, when he left a widow, seven sons, and four daughters to mourn him. His widow resides on the homestead at Lower Moutere, wher theproperty is managed by one of the younger sons. Mrs herrick is a very old colonist, as she arrived at Nelson by the ship "Clifford" on the 24th May 1842.. They had 14 children, the childrens names and birth dates are taken out of a family bible.and from a letter written by Emily E. Registrar-Generals index gives marriage date of William John Herrick and Julia Ratt as 1847. Was this an arranged marriage? It will be why his name is not on the herrick birth list,.he was adopted by William John Herrick and to be known as his 1st son.. children of William Ashton and Sarah Herrick are to be confirmed , but family thinks that Leonard Herrick was one of his sons.
